Harris Investment Management Launches New Institutional Investment Products

Harris Investment Management Launches New Institutional Investment Products
New 130/30, MicroCap and International Equity Products Provide Focused Vehicles for Investors

CHICAGO, May 17, 2007 – Harris Investment Management, Inc. (HIM) is pleased to announce three new investment products that answer client demand for focused investment vehicles for the institutional market.

“We’ve identified three ways in which our disciplined approach to investment management can be used to find value in areas that were previously underutilized, under-researched or new,” said William Leszinske, president and chief investment officer, Harris Investment Management, Inc. “By identifying potential client needs and applying our strengths in quantitative analysis and multi-dimensional market insight, we’re able to bring institutional clients these exciting new products.”

HIM MicroCap
The HIM MicroCap product is a long equity portfolio focusing on the microcap universe of the U.S. equity markets, using the Russell Microcap Index as its benchmark. Dr. Ernesto Ramos, PhD, senior partner and head of quantitative research, and Tom Lettenberger, CFA, CPA and principal portfolio manager, developed a new quantitative model to target the microcap universe, using HIM’s extensive historical small cap research and building upon improving data quality from within the small cap universe.

“For institutional investors, investing in companies of this size presents several challenges, such as liquidity constraints, risk and investment horizon,” said Lettenberger. “With this product, we have found a quantitative process that is quite effective in deciphering the universe and identifying stocks that outperform.” Lettenberger will be the lead manager on the strategy.

The market capitalization range of the Russell Microcap Index as of the most recent rebalance (June 2006) was approximately $70 million to $650 million.

HIM International Equity
The HIM International Equity product launched in March 2007 with a $10 million mandate. It was developed over the course of a year by Dr. Ernesto Ramos, Antonio Ramos, principal and senior quantitative analyst and Mark Wimer, CFA, principal portfolio manager. Setting this product apart from typical international equity products, HIM used a quantitative stock selection model to build the portfolio. Wimer is the lead manager on the strategy.

“We have noted a marked improvement in the quality of data from non-US sources,” said Dr. Ramos. “This is what has made it possible to accurately use our model to capture value in these international markets.”

The HIM International Equity Investment Process, like all HIM equity strategies, ranks stocks using fundamental, valuation and investor interest factors.

HIM 130/30 (Short Extension)
The HIM 130/30 product combines a traditional long equity portfolio with a long/short portfolio composed of 30 percent leveraged exposure on the long side by selling short 30 percent of portfolios assets. It allows moderate shorting to better reflect negative views on stocks that are expected to under perform and to use the short proceeds to further fund overweight stocks that are expected to outperform. The team of Dr. Ernesto Ramos, E. Richard Kuncel, CFA, principal and senior quantitative analyst, and Daniel Sido, senior partner and head of large cap equities, refined the HIM 130/30 strategy to build upon HIM’s history of quantitative portfolio management and ability to use risk-managed qualitative analysis.

“130/30’s are a fast-growing segment of the institutional investment market. Given our 20-year track record of combining quantitative strategies with skilled portfolio oversight, Harris Investment Management is ideally suited to bring this product to market,” said Sido. “Although the product is relatively new, our firm-wide belief in combining extensive quantitative and risk analysis to research and develop competitive investment track records is particularly attractive to our institutional clients.” Sido will be the lead manager on the strategy.
