HARRIS SPONSORS TOYS FOR TOTS
Bring an Unwrapped Toy into Any Harris Branch for Donation
CHICAGO, November 12, 2007 – The holidays are fast approaching, and at no other time does giving mean more, thus for the seventh consecutive year Harris is sponsoring The U.S. Marine Corps "Toys for Tots" toy drive.
On Thursday, November 15, 2007 Toys for Tots collection boxes will be placed in every Harris branch throughout Illinois and Indiana, with the exception of stand-alone ATM locations. Anyone and everyone are welcome and encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to any Harris branch from November 15 through December 19.
"Participating in Toys for Tots has become a holiday tradition here at Harris," said Chuck Tonge, vice chair for Harris Bankcorp Inc., who served with the 2nd Battalion 24th Marines, the headquarters for Chicagoland Toys for Tots. "Children are the heart and soul of the holidays; they bring it alive for all those around them. We cherish the opportunity to help make a child's holiday brighter, and hope that all the communit ies we serve will embrace the same opportunity and bring in an unwrapped toy to any Harris branch."
This year's drive marks the 60th anniversary of the Toys for Tots program, which was launched by Major Bill Hendricks, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles in 1947. At the time 5,000 toys were collected and distributed to needy children in the Los Angeles area. This year, the Marines hope to collect 400,000 toys in the Chicagoland area alone.
